Which Spanish visas need a medical certificate

|---|---|
| Student visa | Yes (BLS lists it for courses longer than 6 months) |
| Non-lucrative residence visa | Yes |
| Family reunification visa | Yes |
| Work visa, employed | Yes |
| Work visa, self-employed | Yes |
| Residence visa for family of a Spanish national | Yes |

Short-stay (Schengen) visas do not need this certificate. If your checklist from BLS differs from this table, follow your checklist.
What the certificate has to say
The embassy wants a statement that you do not have a disease that could seriously affect public health under the International Health Regulations 2005. The checklists published by BLS, Spain's visa centre in Nairobi, give the wording:
We issue the certificate in English with this wording and attach your lab results. The BLS checklists accept documents in English. BLS also says the certificate must be issued within 3 months before you submit your application, so book your exam with that in mind.
Tests and price
The Spanish checklists ask for lab results to be attached but do not name the tests. This is our standard package for EU long-stay visas:
| Item | KES |
|---|---|
| Physical examination by the doctor | 10,000 |
| TB blood test (IGRA) | 9,800 |
| Hepatitis C antibody | 3,900 |
| Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) | 3,000 |
| Syphilis (VDRL) | 750 |
| Total | 27,450 |
A chest X-ray (KES 1,500) is added only if the TB blood test is positive. Vaccines are extra and depend on your vaccination history. Send us your checklist and we'll confirm the total before your visit.
After the exam: attestation and legalisation
Kenya is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so a Kenyan medical certificate cannot be apostilled. It goes through legalisation instead. BLS's legalisation guide for Kenya lists three steps:
- KMPDC attestationSince 3 August 2026, KMPDC attests medical certificates online only. Our KMPDC-registered doctor submits your report on the KMPDC portal. You pay KMPDC's fee of KES 3,000 through eCitizen (eCitizen adds its own small convenience fee). The attested certificate carries a QR code for verification.
- Ministry of Foreign & Diaspora AffairsBLS lists authentication by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the next step.
- Embassy of SpainBLS lists the embassy's legalisation fee as KES 973 per document.
BLS's guide was written for the old counter process at KMPDC and has not been updated for the online system. We'll go through the current steps with you when you book.

Spain visa medical: questions people ask us
Can my medical certificate be apostilled?
No. Kenya is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so Kenyan documents are legalised instead: KMPDC attestation, then the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the Embassy of Spain.
Does the certificate need to be in Spanish?
The BLS work-visa checklist accepts documents in Spanish or officially translated into Spanish or English, and the student checklist accepts English. We issue the certificate in English. Check the language rule on your own checklist.
How recent does the certificate need to be?
BLS says it must be issued within 3 months before you submit your visa application.
Do I need it for a digital nomad visa?
The Embassy of Spain's page for the digital nomad visa does not list a medical certificate. Follow the checklist BLS gives you for your visa.
Does every medical certificate need KMPDC attestation?
No. KMPDC says attestation is only needed when another institution asks for the Council's verification. For Spain, the legalisation route starts with it.
