Who needs a medical certificate for Greece

Greece's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists a medical certificate among the general documents for national (type D, long-stay) visas, whatever the category: study, work, family, digital nomad and others. A few categories, such as family members of diplomats, are exempt.

Short-stay (Schengen) visas do not need this certificate. The Greek Embassy in Nairobi has not published its own checklist online, so ask the embassy or visa centre for the current list before you book.

What the Greek form asks for

The ministry's model form, "Medical certificate for long stay D visa for Greece", is completed by the doctor "based on the examination and results of laboratory tests". It names two conditions to check for: active tuberculosis of the respiratory system, and syphilis. It also covers other infectious and parasitic diseases, drug dependence and serious mental disorders.

ItemNamed on the Greek form?KES
Physical examination by the doctorYes (examination)10,000
TB blood test (IGRA)Yes (tuberculosis)9,800
Syphilis (VDRL)Yes (syphilis)750
Hepatitis C antibodyNo, part of our EU package3,900
Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)No, part of our EU package3,000
Total, EU long-stay package27,450

A chest X-ray (KES 1,500) is added only if the TB blood test is positive. Vaccines are extra.

Attestation, translation and validity

The Greek ministry's guidance we found does not say whether the certificate needs KMPDC attestation, legalisation, a Greek translation or a maximum age. Ask the embassy when you collect your checklist. If they want KMPDC attestation, our KMPDC-registered doctor submits it online and you pay KMPDC's KES 3,000 fee through eCitizen.

The ministry's guide we used dates from January 2022. Greece replaced its migration code in 2023, so rules may have moved since.

What to bring

  • Your passport and a copy of the photo page
  • One recent colour passport photo (KMPDC needs it if your certificate is attested)
  • Your vaccination card, if you have one
  • Records of any long-term condition or regular medicine
  • The checklist or form you were given by the embassy, visa centre, university or employer

Greece visa medical: questions people ask us

Do I need a medical certificate for a Greek digital nomad visa?

Greece's ministry lists the medical certificate as a general document for all national visa categories, including digital nomads. Confirm with the embassy's current checklist.

Does Greece require a chest X-ray?

The Greek form names active respiratory tuberculosis but does not specify the test. We use a TB blood test (IGRA) and add a chest X-ray only if it is positive.

Can the certificate be apostilled?

No. Kenya is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. If the embassy wants the certificate verified, it goes through KMPDC attestation and legalisation instead.
