What are STIs / STDs?
Sexually Transmitted Infections are infections transmitted through sexual contact. This includes vaginal, oral and anal sex. STIs are sometimes referred to as STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases). Some examples include HIV/AIDS, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and many more. STIs are very common but sometimes aren’t caught because the symptoms may not be clear or the symptoms don’t show at all. Having an STI can lead to other health problems and complications depending on which STI it is. STIs can be contracted through unprotected sex, genital touching or from a pregnant mother to her child.
Why STIs / STDs are problems?
TIs such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are important preventable causes of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) and infertility. Untreated, about 10-15% of women with chlamydia will develop PID. Chlamydia can also cause fallopian tube infection without any symptoms. PID and “silent” infection in the upper genital tract may cause permanent damage to the fallopian tubes, uterus, and surrounding tissues, which can lead to infertility.
